you hold them or push them away,

too often chained to them.

What is a memory?

It is an impression,

for instance

the impression of a foot –

a footprint.

It is not what happened,

but the impression left

of what happened;

it is the impression

of a now absence.

Understanding memory

in this way,

it is what never

actually happened,

but in its impression

what drives what happens.

The shape and depth of impressions

may vary

and may even be washed away

like the ocean tide washes away

footprints on the shore.

What remains is just-what-is

impressions behind and ahead

also the landscape

just as it is.
