A Different Future Arrived

Is there a future

that isn’t an extension

of the present,

that isn’t progress

(or regress)

in a straight line

from the present,

according to some standard

you have set?

A different future, unimagined.

Just in your moment

of doubt and uncertainty

as to what this could be –

in your utter openness –

it has arrived.

Without going back

to your old present,

comparing the new to it,

killing it off in so many ways,

now, how is it

and how is it nurtured?

Not by turning it

into stone.
