‘I’ Is Not A Thing

09/16/2016

‘I’ is not a thing,

but a way of functioning.

It’s the process

of seeing everything

as a means or threat

to one’s security

and as an instrument

to achieve pleasure

and avoid pain.

Undertaking this project

as a child

(suckling mother’s

soft, warm breast

one moment

and touching fire

the next)

was not a choice,

and now,

seeing its narrow limit,

neither is its ending.
