Transience Realized

02/29/2016

You lived in love

with your husband,

father of your two sons,

for 37 years

until he died.

Scourged then,

still you did not cry.

More than a decade later,

now 78 years old,

with another of your age

you found a wondrous winter romance.

When he died five years later,

you cried and cried.

I asked you why

you shed tears

for your later love

and not for your life partner –

and you said,

“That likely was the last time,

  what we had,

  his life-no-more

  also the death

  in my life

  of all romance.”
